“I got a call from Condé Nast’s (now defunct) Portfolio magazine to shoot an editorial piece about Carl’s Jr. We shot in the CJ test kitchens with home econo­mists, but no experienced food stylist. I built this burger myself in front of the camera one layer at a time, so I could see it coming together from that angle. I wanted it a little sloppy, but very stylized. We made the cover, but this shot was never used. They opted for another 12-inch stacked burger for its exaggerated appeal. People love this burger! It’s gotten me several projects and many stock sales.”
