Responses by Charles Miller, founder, Platoon

Background: Climate produces standout campaign media for consumer brands. The agency works alongside both in-house teams and agencies to develop and execute creative concepts. This project had two core goals: to create a visual identity that reflects the company’s unique personality and to create a portfolio that would catch the eye of the ideal customer. Climate’s target audiences are bold creative directors who are excited to push the limits.

Highlights: Climate’s new logo is three-dimensional. We wanted users to experience it in a unique way on the website. We created an interactive 3-D logo that reacts to the user’s cursor position sitting atop of slowly scrolling samples of Climate’s work, creating a whimsical yet bold presentation. Beyond aesthetics, the smooth page transitions and focused content enable a clean and simple user experience.

Challenges: Climate needed to launch with a bang. Climate is a very resourceful company, with an unconventional approach to its work and a bold vision for the future. Our mission was to create an identity that reflected each of these traits. The bulk of our time and effort was spent developing several design concepts—many of which will never see the light of day! Once we finally landed on a concept that our team felt was strong, and also resonated with the client, we knew we had something truly special.

Navigational features: There are really only two pages: “Work” and “Info.” We wanted to showcase Climate’s body of work in a way that would make users actually pay attention to it. The homepage consists of work slowly scrolling down the page, inviting users to explore for more. The “Info” page is very clear and straightforward—leaving no question as to what Climate does.

Anything new: This project reminded us how valuable it can be for agencies to bring in outside collaborators and specialists. On this project, our team brought in a lot of outside talent: Garrett DeRossett, Destiny Keller, Matt Reyer, Fabio Carretti and Francesco Michelini. Being able to collaborate with such a diverse team from multiple disciplines yields new approaches and perspectives that we could not have accomplished on our own. This project has also given us a better idea of what can be achieved using powerful technology like WebGL, and we are excited to implement it on future projects.
