Responses by Mathieu Durand, founder, Dystopian Creatives.
Background: The site showcases the work of the animation studio Dystopian Creatives.
Design core: One of the cool things we developed with web development guru Pierre Gradelet was the overlay of text and images. I wanted a full-page feeling. This, aligned with the great usage of a grid, gave us plenty of opportunities to experiment. Pierre also did amazing work bringing the animations I made to the site.
Favorite details: I love how the menu came out. I also dig the scroll animations Pierre added to the site—got to love that parallax!
Challenges: For the most part, the site’s process was pretty straightforward. At Dystopian, we mostly design motion graphics and create short films, so designing for the web is definitely a different beast.
Alternate version: I would add a giant statue of myself rotating in 3-D space over the whole website! For a full-on dystopia.
Navigation structure: I wanted the work we do to be in the spotlight. The navigation was here to serve this purpose, very simple and effective.
Technology: The whole site development is based on WordPress. Pierre also did a deep dive into GSAP for all the different animations—scroll, sprites and the typography randomization.
