"One year after the attacks of September 11th, 2001, I returned to New York with reporter Juliet Macur to do a follow-up story on a crew of firefighters who had all been trapped together in the World Trade Center when it collapsed but had all miraculously survived. We found the crew scattered all over the city and struggling with the guilt of surviving a tragedy many of their brothers had not. Many had been promoted to fill the spots of their fallen superiors. Jay Jonas was promoted to Battalion Chief in a station that had lost the majority of its men. Photographed for the Dallas Morning News with available light on the streets of New York."
