In Bauchi, Nigeria, I documented a nonprofit’s program of engaging local barbers to help with immunization programs for newborn babies. In this culture, newborn babies are shaved seven days after birth by traditionally trained barbers. Health workers employ the barbers to give out yellow cards to the parents, which they are to turn in to the local health clinic. The barber then follows up with the family to make sure the child is taken in for their early childhood immunizations. Here, I was drawn to the graphic shadows of the parents on the wall, watching as the barber prepared to work with their newborn.
