"The shopping Goddess was one of the hardest characters in the book to 'get right,' until I decided to flip through a few personal sketchbooks and found one of my Wal-Mart character-studies that fit her perfectly; In saw a man who had been mauled: Editor Amy Schell had some reservations (with good reason) about a particular spread in the book—the one prior to this image of a man beating his pet dog. This spread, with the same pet and owner, was my justification."
