Follow dust particles as they travel from the Sahara to the Amazon. Observe waves of phytoplankton blooms. Or watch the change of seasons from the vantage of space. Thanks to Philadelphia-based digital agency Bluecadet, visitors can explore Earth’s air, water and life systems—and the interconnections between them—simply by visiting National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. Here, within the new Neighborhood Earth exhibit—designed by Cleveland-based design firm RGI—the interactive tool Data Lens waits. By enabling visitors to examine, compare and juxtapose data visualizations, Data Lens helps them discover the interplay among our planet’s systems and better understand the way our world works. Guests can combine lenses to reveal new stories and insights, evidencing the beauty found when layering powerful data sets. Bluecadet not only renders what might otherwise be daunting scientific data as a compelling and playful experience, but also conveys the magnitude and complexity of the work being done by the thousands of scientists, engineers and technologists who work at NASA. With a goal of advancing humanity’s understanding of Earth as an environmental system, NASA now has a new tool to interpret and present such scientific data to the general public.
