Pool at Night. "In researching this illustration I was struck by how much potential pools have as a pictorial device. They can take any shape and project all different sorts of light, sparkly daylight or mysterious night light. They are rife with associations of childhood, sensuality, and romance. I'm looking forward to painting more pools if I get the chance. At first I rejected the figure on the right because it isn't clear what she is doing. Then I decided to keep her because it isn't clear what she is doing. I'm thankful to the art director for tolerating a little bit of ambiguity. I prefer pictures that raise questions as much as answer them."
