Toronto-based design firm Overdrive Design, Ltd. created a new site for general contractor Structure Corp.’s extensive portfolio. On the home page, 28 tiles represent more than 60 different portfolio pieces, linking to photography-heavy case studies. “Photography plays a large role on this site and efforts were made to enhance users’ interactions with each image,” says Overdrive Design principal James Wilson. “Images transition from black and white to full color when highlighted with the mouse on desktops; on mobile devices, the images transition to color when visitors view more than 30 percent of the image on the screen. This creates a gentle cue for navigation.” Overdrive Design also designed the site’s layout with three distinct access points for each portfolio piece: a responsive thumbnail on the home page, nested inside the mobile menu and inside each portfolio page as “previous” and “next” navigation arrows that fade onto the screen. These work to heighten the site’s experience with a subtle and intuitive navigation system.
