Background: Our film for scientist and climate impact scholar Johan Rockström and TED was created to open TED’s online Countdown event in October 2020. The film’s purpose was to follow up on Johan’s last talk from TED2010 and bring new awareness to the climate in an informative and creative way.
Reasoning: We needed to find a production pipeline where we could create a lot of animation in a short amount of time. We invited ten of our friends and colleges to help out on this collaborative piece and handed out one scene for everyone to work on. Then, Brikk director Björn Johansson was in charge of adding his magic to every scene to make it all coherent.
Challenges: The short time frame and the length of the film were the most significant challenges. We usually work with 30- to 90-second long films, but this film is almost eight minutes long.
Visual influences: Old Sex Pistols records.
Specific demands: The almost eight-minute length made it harder, but the creative team at TED really trusted in us and the process made everything easy!
Anything new: We learned that you can work with iPhone apps to create stunning oil panted animations.
Alternative approach: We would, of course, have loved to create more animated scenes.
