Mark van Wageningen, typeface designer
Novo Typo, foundry
“The Typewood project is about transforming and translating a digital font into analog material. Recent developments in browser techniques inspired us to do some research into multicolored and multilayered typography. To understand these new techniques, it was necessary to research analog techniques. We designed and developed the Bixa typeface on the computer. In collaboration with a fabrication laboratory, we produced five complete sets of wooden, multilayered letters. For this, we used a hypermodern CNC router and printed a series of posters on an antique book press. Bixa is available as a wooden letterset and as a digital file.”
