“We set out to reinvent word search puzzles by changing the conventional forms and rules to those that require a higher level of cognition from users, especially visual processing. Oddly for designers, this meant reducing legibility, either by choosing display faces—the extreme case being the maze-like Optica, by Cocijotype—or by obscuring text faces through rotation, distortion, layering and other methods. Typography inspired the editorial content of puzzles as often as content inspired the typography.”
