I was asked to express the 'color of skin' for BRAIN, a Japanese design magazine focusing on global design. By itself, this letter is translated as 'color'; when it's duplicated the translation is 'variety.' While brainstorming concepts, I repeatedly drew the character. That's when I realized the character looked like a man's face with a questioning expression. Based on that, I began to look at the characters to mean 'a variety of skin colors.'
